well worth the priceI have had several sets of auger bits that only lasted a few uses before becoming so dull they wouldn't drill at all. These bits are great. A little more expensive, but worth it if you use them a lot.

Outstanding wood bitWoodOwl 09715 1 1/8" x 7-1/2" Tri-Cut Ultra Smooth Auger Bit
The quality of this bit is 1st rate. Roll it on a smooth table and there is zero distortion. The business end is very sharp and the flutes are perfectly machined. It comes with a screw-on cap to protect the bit end, as well as a padded plastic case for the bit.
I had been using a spade bit to cut holes in treated 6x6 timbers. 1 1/8" is the perfect size for 3/4" steel pipe, which makes a great stake to hold the timbers in place. The spade bits were frustrating to use as they cut slowly. The chips would clog in the hole and stop the bit from cutting, and then it was difficult to extract the bit. The holes weren't very smooth, but for timbers, that wasn't all that important.
The WoodOwl bit is in a whole different league. It cuts very fast and makes a smooth hole. During the first few inches of hole cutting, chips are flying out from those triple flutes. As the hole gets deeper, chip flying slows down, and they start to accumulate in the bit's flutes instead. I use a Makita DA6300 1/2" right angle drill with this bit, because this tool has far more torque than my other drills. This torque is primarily due to the gearing and very low RPM's. At the 1200 RPM setting, the drill slows down due to chip accumulation, at about the 5" point in the hole. The bit had to be reversed out of the hole to clean off the chips before continuing; but unlike a spade bit, it quickly backs out of the hole. At the 300 RPM setting, which provides tremendous torque, the bit quickly cut all the way through a 6x6 without stopping.
This is a terrific bit, but you'll need a high torque drill for deep cuts.

New Hampshire Certified. I recently purchased the YardMachines Gold 8.5, 26" 2 stager to replace my snow plow that I am selling. I live in New Hampshire, so we are no stranger to 8"-12" storms, and in the past 4 years or so, a few 16" - 32" overnight storms per year.
I also own a small electric Toro PowerShovel. (works great on small storms.)
Amazon had a great deal on this YardMachines for $799, plus a coupon at checkout for $25 and free delivery! How could I beat that? A couple days after my order, New England had the Blizzard of 2005 and the price apparently jumped to $999 for this same blower. I guess that is supply and demand at work.
The blower arrived and setup took all of 30 minutes to connect this to that, read the manuals, and what not. The unit is "mostly" assembled, only requiring you to click the handle together, the snow chute and a few other very minor things.
As I had significant snow left over on the driveway (400 foot long by 30 feet wide in some areas and 20 feet in others) I set right to work.
It cleaned up nicely on the 1-2 inches I had on the ground. It cuts pretty close to the cement which is good. I then went to work on the snow banks and tried to clear my turnaround. I had about 38 inches of snow stacked up there.
Within 35 minutes or so, I had cleared all of these areas with 2 passes. Very easy, very powerful unit. It throws snow 35 feet or more and the volume of snow flying out of the chute is impressive.
The 6 speeds are nice giving you options moving around. The 2 reverse speeds also help. I am 6 foot, 185lbs and in pretty good shape. I can manhandle this blower pretty well, but a lighter weight person will have a problem. I don't think however that this unit is any worse than any blower of similar size and weight so don't be discouraged by that.
The reason I scored the unit a 4 instead of a 5 is that it is loud. I have heard other blowers which seem much quieter. I would give this unit a 4.8 otherwise, if Amazon allowed for decimals.
Bottom line: I don't think I'll be worried about large snow storms any longer. This unit is easy to start with the electrical starter, is powerful and can handle deep deep snow, and has many nice features.

Broken within a couple of weeksDidn't expect a lot of power, but this hardly threw snow 5 feet. I got more power out of my Murray bikes I rode when I was a kid.
I quickly got used to avoiding the power cord, but after three uses, it slowed down and eventually stopped working altogether. I took it apart a bit, but I couldn't figure out what was wrong besides a damaged motor. There is a 30-day "Normal Wear Parts" Guarantee, so I'll have to check that out.
UPDATE: Had to have the electric motor replaced, luckily under warranty, because the repair was more than the original price I paid. It took about 10 weeks to get it repaired, which even in New England was longer than was left in winter. So I placed it in my garage to await for the summer tag sale season.

Okay for an electric one!I was not to impressed with this snow blower, I bought this one because I have like maybe 100 ft of sidewak I need to clear - well I quickly got the hang of not running over the cord for the machine but I just was not happy with how far the snow was blown it was like a foot maybe, so by time I get to the other side, I have all the snow and guess what it is too much for the snow blower! AHH.... You live and learn!

you should not offer what you cannot deliver! My wife had ordered this plus the 1 inch size for me at the begining of February. I got the 1 inch size in but the 3/4ths size bit is nowhere to be seen! I find this very frustrating! The website now has this item as discontinued or not stocked. There seems to be no insight as to when and If I will ever see this bit. This was my first online purchase and it will most likely be my last.

Total Waste of MoneyI own a couple of other Hound Dog products that were excellent. Unfortunately, this item is completely useless. You can't even dig a hole with it when the ground is soft as butter.
Amazon refused to pay for shipping to return it. Since it would cost as much to pay for return shipping as the item itself, it will eventually become part of my "Useless Objects" sculpture.
