I've used this unit for two winters, and while it does a good job for the money, it definately puts out more fumes than other forced air heaters. I haven't compared it to other LP forced air heaters, if there are any, but ones that use diesel/kero burn much cleaner and it's no where close to a catalytic block style heater. If you look down the barell while it's running, it's basically just a giant flame.

If you are heating a semi-enclosed area, spend the extra $50US to get the liquid fuel one.

The item is still not in hand. I read other people's reviews, luckily, so I was aware that the item might not be coming quickly and, true to form, it has not. Shipping has been bumped back twice. The other items I ordered, on the same day, got here weeks ago, (probably about a month ago). SO, based on shipping, I am giving a poor review. Amazon *should* update the site to warn folks that the item is NOT shipped right off and Amazon should also have it's sellers being accurate about the shipping times also.

Once I get the item, (which, hopefully, won't be TOO much longer), I'll do a review of it.

Hope the item is better than the shipping. :)

I also ordered this item believing that it would ship within 1 to 2 weeks as stated. After ordering, I checked on my account and now the ship date is 10 weeks. This is already off to a bad start. This vendor should be audited by Amazon as they do not state true shipping information.

Ordered Oct 13, arrived Nov 16. I haven't had time to really try it out. Rating is based on delivery time.

Added Feb 25: I finally went to use it, and there is a big weakness. You are supposed to keep the propane tank outside any building (according to legal codes). The unit has about an eight foot hose for the gas. The valve is on the top of the propane tank (outdoors) and the heating unit is, say, inside your garage. So you run outside to turn on the valve, then run inside to operate the ignitor. And of course the unit must be near the door, so if it goes up in flames it's blocking the exit.

Ideally it would have a longer hose and valves at both ends.

I ordered two of these fans in red unfortunate for me that they are junk,they are both being sent back to amazon the main problem is that the head of the fan unit doesnt securely attach to the stand & there is an issue with the grill that it doesnt fit together i think overall its has design issues. Also its not completely metal it has cheap plastic fittings that will definetly crack over time with use and dismantling for cleaning, its not a true red color its more of a rusty red or cinnamon color which was also dissapointing since i wanted fire engine red which it looks like in the picture posted here on amazon.
i wondered if the holmes company actually tested the design before putting it on the market, i could hardly believe they did since its so poorly constructed. I also used my $25. off coupon with purchase of $125. in housewares and now i believe im out of that discount for May and even if amazon would allow me to use the promotion again to reorder 2 new fans im sure id have to spend another $125. which i think is unfair.
well overall shopping on amazon has always been a good experience with quality goods and fair pricing and discounts except for this one time not bad considering i make many purchases here. and they do have a good return policy.

I liked the LOOK of this fan, but unfortunately it has to go back. You get to the end of the assembly and then you find that the front grill cover won't attach to the back. After struggling with the cheap plastic rim that is supposed to lock onto the back grill for about 30 minutes I gave up! Even if there's a chance you might get it to fit, good luck next time if you need to clean it or if the grill bends just the slightest bit you'll likely never get it re-attached. Did Holmes test this design? It's NOT functional and it flat-out doesn't work!

On the surface this is the perfect heater: small, quiet, good thermostate, however within 6 months it stopped working completely and you have virtually no recourse but to say good-bye to your money and your not so good-buy. keep shopping

I 'm afraid I have to concur with the previous reviewer. After going through three low-priced Holmes units in two years, I'm beginning to view them as disposable heat. The problem seems to be related to a safety fuse or circuit breaker that becomes defective and prevents the unit from staying on for more than a few seconds. The only recourse is to send the thing back to the company for repair, which at these prices is not a practical option. I finally invested a bit more in a Vornado, which is not only still kicking but kicks out more heat.

Although the product functions well, it better be used in a garage or other remote area. Mine is in the laundry room and the clock groaning can be heard in the adjoining bath as well as the laundry room. It was relatively quiet for 2 years then became noisy. in addition, unless you live in an area with extremely expensive electric rates the $56.00 cost plus installation might put your payback time in the distant future. Fortunately I installed my own but remember it is 220 volts we're talking about here. I have been told that the efficiency of current hot water heaters (better insulation etc.) makes the use of this clock to save money a dubious endeavor.

I agree with the other review. I use it for a 220V air conditioner. While the AC is louder than the timer, the timer is running all the time, and especially annoying inside.

I needed a heater for my garage in the winter. I'd read the poor reviews but thought I could take good care of the heater and make it last. WRONG. No matter what you do, this thing is good for 1-2 uses before the fuel lines get hopelessly clogged. Everything said about this heater is correct. Even right out of the box it was difficult to start and never worked well with the portable propane tanks. It eventually worked with a new 20lb tank, but again not without some difficulty getting started. Unfortunately it was good for only two uses before the fuel paths were clogged. At about $60 per use, there are lots of better options.

If you decide to buy this heater - buy an optional filter if you plan to use a 20lb propane tank! If you use the canister 1lb tanks - it will only heat for a few hours.

My heater clogged up after two nights of use - sure it was great and kept our Aliner camper toasty - but $129 for two nights warmth? After that it clogged up and lit intermittently - the warranty is not good - so I finally put it in the trash - great heater if used with optional filter - jeffreylors@yahoo.com

Here's what you should know BEFORE you buy this thing. It is inefficient, expensive, and environmentally lousy with 1 lb disposable cylinders. If you are planning to use a 20lb propane tank, be aware that you can only get near the 220 hour (at low) performance by using 2 tanks. The heater has 2 regulators, 2 heating tiles, and 2 connections. At low and medium settings you will only use one of the `tiles'. On high, both tiles will burn brightly. The fan is noisy and sucks down D cell batteries, but really doesn't move much air. There is also the AC adapter option: Radio Shack sells it for about 18-20$. Mr. Heater Customer Service can provide the part numbers but cannot sell you the item. When you talk with them, you might as well order the fuel filters ($9.95 each) that you will need if you use 20 pound tanks. For 2 tanks, order 2 filters. The filters are a (moisture/impurity) trap that prevents the tiny holes in the heating tiles from filling up with junk. Propane may be equal at creation, but one never knows how it has been stored. Use the filters. If you use 20 lb tanks, you will also need hoses. Mr. Heater makes them in 5 and 12 foot lengths. Amazon seems to have the best price on these. You should expect to spend $100-$150 above the price of the heater for hoses, tanks, filters, AC adapter.
Feeding the rumor mill: There was a Consumer Product Safety Commission Recall of this item during the Winter 04/05. It impacted all heaters sold prior to about January 10, 2005. The problem concerned a potential malfunction of the regulator/control valve assemblies. My first heater was affected by the recall. I had no use of it for the winter of 04/05. My second heater works just fine.
Amazon Customer Service: EXTREMELY POOR as it relates to this purchase. I purchased my heater days before the recall was announced. Amazon refused to accept my return of this item even though it had not been used. They also took down product reviews alerting customers to the recall (and potential safety hazard) of this item. After numerous polite but fruitless conversations, I contacted the President of Amazon with my complaint. He has chosen to ignore it. I would probably buy this heater again despite the problems. I would never buy anything from Amazon again because of the problems.

Unless you sit right next to it, you do not feel any heat whatsoever. Returned it immediately.

I purchased this unit as a supplemental heat source for a small bedroom. It was unable to warm the room and ran constantly because the heater was never able to reach the temperature necessary for the thermostat to shut it off. It only works if you sit close to it.

I saw this space heater and thought it would be perfect. The problem I have with it is that the heat only comes out of a 6 inch area at the top of the heater, but it has a grill that would make you believe that the heat would come out of the whole front of the unit. It does get very warm and has great safety features, but it doesn't give off enough heat to warm people sitting 2 feet from the unit.

Amazon states that this unit comes with "on board tools" but in truth it doesn't come with anything other than a 4 inch upholstery tool. And that one was missing from mine. I expected that there would be more than one(note the plural part of tools) but I guess that on Amazon tools doesn't mean the same thing.

This remanufactured item was also shipped with all the parts just thrown into the box-it was not "packed" the way equipment should be.

Most of my disappointment with this item comes from Amazon and their misleading ad.

This product doesn't deserve the star. Amazon required that I at least give it one, but I cannot do so . . . Bought one of these about three years ago. The roller worked, sometimes, and then the housing on the motor cracked. Too costly to repair, so I gave Bissell one more chance. Never again. I emphatically agree with the other reviewer - CHEAP! The wothless plastic mount for the roller brush - a key feature in a steam cleaner Bissell! - broke 6 months after it was put into use. The steam "cleaner" only leaves 1" wide streaks of clean carpet where the soap falls onto the carpet. Tough traffic areas? Hmmm, that's the purpose of these machines right? Sorry, won't do it. Don't waste your money.

I ordered this item on Dec 30th, Delay, Delay, Delay....Guess what? Still no heater! It's not a Good Deal if they don't actually SELL IT! Finally cancelled , will buy from a Local Merchant that acually has one to sell.

I ordered this heater on December 21, 2005. I am still waiting patientely for it to be shipped. Apparentely, the seller dosen't want to let this item go at the sale price. So they have chosen to grasp at the stall tactic, hoping I will cancel the order, therefore, being able to sell this heater at a higher price to an unsuspecting customer. I guess Amazon.com should screen their sales companies because with service like this I won't bother using them again!

Too expensive buy one at Home Depot or Lowes.
