Nice RadioHaving said that, our family has been quite pleased with the pair we purchased. They have put some thought into the ergonomic design of this radio. It is not nearly as heavy or bulky as our older, commercial quality HT. It fits securely in the hand, has a clear display with a signal strength meter, clear sound quality, and a convenient placement of controls. The receiver appears to be a significant improvement over its predecessor, the PR 4000. It can use either subaudible tone or digital coded squelch; these are useful in a crowded environment.
Especially nice is the signal strength meter that registers all activity on the channel whether or not it actually opens the squelch. If you are not in a conversation, it lets you know there is other activity on the channel. If you are in a conversation, it alerts you to the fact your radio may not be interpreting the DCS word or the subaudible tone due to interference. That way, you may open up the squelch manually using the monitor button, so you do not miss parts of your party's transmission.
Even though I have access to commercial quality equipment, I find myself using the PR 4700 more and more of the time for simplex operations.
My biggest disappointment is how all of the manufacturers are exaggerating the range claims. My guess is Cobra probably feels like it has to use the same standards for marketing as other manufacturers, or lose in the competition.

Absolutely AwesomeThe only drawbacks I see for military operations is the constant blinking red light, which can be reduced with duct tape, and the constant exposure to rain which could damage the radio. Otherwise they have been provided nothing but Convenience and reliability.
I strongely recommend this radio.

Rechargable batteries are a mustI play paintball in the woods with friends a lot and started off with the 250s. I like these even more. You can easily get 2 miles of coverage in the woods between friends with these. If you plan on using these in the woods I would recommend using an earbud and mic or the headset with boom mic to allow the VOX system to operate more effectively. With the limitations of the paintball mask I can only use the earbud with mic. We even plan on using these during hunting season this year, but that is another story.

Great for kids
Good and cheap Walkie - TalkieAnother problem is with the user manual. For using GMRS channels you have to get FCC permission, but the website mentioned in the manual is outdated. Still I am ssearching for the right URL to the license site.
All in all it was a good purchase though.

Lost one of the radios. It fell down from the hill top during a recent hike. Now left with one radio and looking for an option to buy a replacement for the missing radio (not a pair). But it really helped as long as it was available.
great priceihad to get the cheaper ones but if you have the money go for the more expensive ones they get more range. midland is a reputable company and they make solid products.
