Planers Review shipping package
Just got the brand new 2012NB planer and could not believe the way it was packaged. It was rattling around loose in a cardboard box. Amazingly enough there is no apparent damage that I have found yet but I can't believe they would cheap out like that on a nice $400 piece of equipment. Check your package thoroughly for possible freight damage. A little surprised that the Hood is an accessory and does not come with the tool.

Planers Review the best available
I just got this and planed some poplar maple and oak baords and wow was I impressed with it..I also have the Dewalt 735 which is now for sale because the rollers slip constantly and it is way too loud and the blades wear too fast..this Makita has very simple but effective features which is what makita is all about. The stock repeat stop is great set it and just crank down to it to get the exact size stock over and over again, the automatic snipe control works great and it comes with the fold down table bed extensions which are also adjustable,I also love the quietness it is the just under the noise level of a shop vac not bad at all and it is truly portable the Dewalt is almost 100 lbs and is very tough to move and it has lots of thin cheap feeling plastic, but the Malita is very well built and has a very sturdy and solid aluminum top which is unheard of in the portable planer market most have plastic like the Dewalt. This by far the best out there and Oh ya did I mention how nice it finishes stock it is very smooth with very minimal(almost none) machine marks actually less than the Dewalt and that has two speeds and three cutters but this Malkita provides a better finsh and thats what planing is all about not just changing the thickness of your stock. I think the finish on planed stock is so good because the machine is smooth meaning the motor/bearings/cutterhead they all seem very well balanced and it has a very high quality sound when cutting you can tell the difference between the Makita my old Delta and my Dewalt 735 (NO COMPARISON)!!

Planers Review Meets all expectations
I took my time and did my research, based the other reviews of this tool. Satisfied that so many others thought this a quality product, I took the plunge and bought it. It helped that Amazon was running a 10% off special at the time, so it was considerably less than I could have gotten it else where or on Ebay.

I agree with the other posters that the packaging was flimsy, but the tool was in mint condition.

This is my first planer as well, but I literally unpacked it, plugged it in, and started planing some salvaged redwood boards. This tool is excellent. The finish on the boards was very smooth and in some cases, I don't think I even need to sand them.

Since this was my first planer, it was a surprise to me that it's self feeding, but that makes the use of this tool all the more enjoyable.

As other posters noted, this will create a ton of debris. I ordered the hood too, but it's not due to arrive for a month. Having only a shopvac, I have my doubts whether or not it can keep up, so for now it's going to remain in the garage.

I'm completely satisfied.

Planers Review Could be better
I think that less than $20 is a great price for this attachment. It doesn't come with directions because you don't need them. Installation is only a couple of minutes. It will fit perfect with a dust collector. I use a 4" quick disconnect for mine with a delta 1200 cfm dust collector with pre-seperator. I highly recommend doing this because it is so easy do dump all of the shavings. One problem: the hose is directed straight up in the middle. This design is very poor. The 13" inch planer has an angled port which guides the hose easily to the side. Because it is in the middle you have to tie your duct to the side to keep it from hitting your board as it exits the planer. This is not a problem if your hose comes from the ceiling. It is for me because mine ductwork was designed in the floor so that it would be seen. Works good, but could easily be better like the 13" model.

Planers Review Great part - should ship standard
This is a much needed part. Using a 4" to 2 1/2" adaptor, you can hook this up to your shop vac. It picks up most of the dust and chips. I used the planner without this part and it was a mess. The only reason this part did not recieve 5 stars is that I felt that Delta should include it as a standard to their planner as it is a much needed feature.
I wish that the web site for the planner had a link to this part. I initially ordered the wrong part and had to return it. I had to research for the part number via the Delta web site and then order it. But worth the pain as it is a great addition to a good tool.

Planers Review Much needed Part
I didn't purchase this item at the same time as I purchased my planer. What a mistake. This makes the operation of the planer so much cleaner and more effective. (I don't have to stop and clear chips out of the way.) The adapter goes to a 4" hose for a regular dust collection setup. However, with an adapter, you can use a shop vac. I used both systems and they both work extremely well. Setup was a breeze and took under five minutes. Very simple and very useful accessory.

Planers Review hitachi planer
The jointer bed is too small for this to be the perfect machine. The planer is excellent, but the total length of the infeed and outfeed bed is very short and makes it difficult to accurately joint long pieces of wood. The first thing that I did after buying this was to buy a 71" powermatic jointer. It is not the most economical way to go.

The exhaust tends to get plugged in both the planer and the jointer with wood chips.

Planers Review Carbide Blades
The blades for the P12RA are what in trade referred to as "specialized" blades because they have custom slots and holes. Consequently, you are tied into the manufacturer for blades.

Despite reports to the contrary and the failure of these blades to appear in the documentation as parts or accessories, Hitachi does offer carbide blades for P12RA planer and the jointer. The Hitachi part numbers are: planer - 200001 and jointer - 401000. I just ordered both sets from an authorized Hitachi parts supplier, be ready for sticker shock, the MFG list price for the blades are $448.71 for the planer and $224.35 for the jointer as of April 7, 2006. The vendor I purchased from discounted my price to 80% of the list price.

The toll free number to Hitachi Power Tools Customer Service is 800-706-7337.

Planers Review WONDERFUL MACHINE
I've had my Hitachi P12RA planer for 8 years and couldn't be happier. Originally, I wanted to buy their F1000A cast iron planer/jointer but discovered Hitachi no longer exports it to the USA. Since the F1000A is SOOOOOOOOOOOO remarkable, I took the chance on this "little brother" and was very pleased- with the planer.

The quality of cut is outstanding, and boards come out dead accurate. In fact, I go to this planer over my 2 year old Jet 15" stationary planer almost every time. The Jet is a workhorse so that should tell ya something! Setup is simple. The knives are really beefy and all the other parts (castings, chains, bearings, adjusting screws) are heavy and well made. I get "slick-as-glass" results even on ebony. Since most of the components are aluminum alloy or stainless steel, I don't even have to fight rust.

Though the jointer is powerful and gives a fantastic finish to the wood, it's just too simplistic. There isn't a way to align the infeed and outfeed tables, which makes getting a flat board almost impossible. They are fixed except to adjust the depth of cut. In fact, holding a straight edge to the length of the jointer bed reveals both tables angle away from the cutterhead. Since I make guitars, this sort of thing drives me bananas. I actually sent the jointer portion back to the dealer for a partial refund.

My advice is to buy the planer portion only. Spent the money for the dust hood too. It's well put together and very effective. This planer has been featured in several books and magazine articles over the years, and for a good reason. You will be amazed with the results!

Planers Review go carbide next time
these knives are ok. they don't last too long as they are only steel, not carbide. next time i would spend the xtra and get carbide ones. these knives go dull in just soft wood, as is expected from a steel knife. these delta knives are good for what they are.
go carbide.

Planers Review Very sharp
If you wanna cut something, this is kinda kool!

Expensive a bit, but just a little bit (like mine after it touched the blade)

I should have sharpened them myself with a big mac since the meat is so tough so it can sharpen the blade.

Hasta la vista!

Have a good night!

Planers Review Don't Wait Too Long To Change Your Blades!

I experienced a broken gear on my Dewalt planer. Since my planer was out of warranty, I went through the hassle of replacing it myself.

Immediately after doing that, I put a set of these blades on.

What a difference! I had not realized that my old blades had become dull. They were still doing a great job, but what I didn't realize is that the planer was pulling too hard now. It was working too hard to plane the wood with dull blades.

Once I changed the blades, the planer had a completely different sound. Sometimes, the motor speed doesn't even change when the blades hit the wood... that's how much difference the blades made.

And don't worry... the blade height measuring jig that came as part of your DeWalt planer makes the entire process easy as can be.

Don't wait too long, or you may be replacing gears too!

Planers Review Top Notch
Purchased this planer a little over 1 year ago, like all of my DeWalt power tools an exellent tool at a reasonable price. (I sound like salesman) I've run about 450bf of 4/4 rough planed red oak through it, but I must admit it's about time for the knives to be sharpend, to no surprise. I work it like you would a much larger non-portable planer and it holds up to the test. The single most thing that impressed me is that straight from the box the factory set-up was perfectly within specs and has stayed that way to this day. It's paid for itself many times over, and if I ever had to purchase another planer, DeWalt would be the first I would consider. Yellow and black are becoming the dominant colors in my shop.

Planers Review well balanced planer
I was struck by its unusual appearance and this made me stop and look at this unit - I'm glad I did! The thing I really like about it is the wood chips never clog up the machine. With 3 blades cutting and the motor being higher in the machine than others it prevents this happening.
I enjoy using this planer so I would recommend it to anyone.

Planers Review Best I have used
I have to agree with Tribo's review above. This planer is one of a kind with the 3 blades. It definately give a far smoother finish than my deWalt and half the weight. Very handy for trimming door and windows.

My only concern was of the blade type, but I can confirm it uses standard tct blades.

The adjustable left or right rear ejection is an excellent feature and has definately saved a me from a facefull of chips on my than one occasion.

Planers Review Tribo
I own one of these and have found it to be far superior to any planer I have used in the last 15 years, and I have used Makita, DeWalt & B&D. It looks a bit strange but once you use it it is well balanced with the motor over the blades. THe 3 blades give a smooth cut and you even get a spare set when you buy it. I think the way they shoot the chips out the back of the planer is fantastic it stops you from getting a face full of shavings. A couple of guys I work with have used it as well and they are right handed where I am left handed so all you have to do is flick the lever and the chips will go either way.

DeWalt DW7350 Mobile Thickness Planer Stand (for DW735 Planer)

    Planers Review good and solid
So good that I bought two more and might buy another soon. Nice and strong, solid, goes together easily. I don't use it for any DeWalt tools, so just drill my own holes to suit.

Planers Review DW7350 a sturdy, reliable stand
Being a woodworker, I was very tempted to build my own stand for my Dewalt 735 thickness planer. I seen this stand and thought I'd give it a try, mainly because of it's wheels. I've had it for over a month now and absolutely love it. This stand is made out of nice thick metal, very sturdy, and even lets you decide how you want to assemble the wheel mechanism. This stand is very stable, easy to roll, and easy to clean up.

I do feel that the assembly instructions could use a bit more detail to help assemble the product, however, that could easily be up to the user.

I would also like to mention this stand is not necessarily made specifically for the Dewalt planers. It does have instructions on how to mount non-Dewalt planers. If you do have a dewalt planer, it has 2 pre-printed templates for both models so you can easily see which holes to use on the tabletop.

    Excellent quality, excellent price.

Planers Review Well worth the money
This is a solid addition to your Hitachi P12RA planer. It can be installed and removed in seconds, and connects to a standard 4" dust collector hose, without the need for adapters. The pictures you may see online or in catalogs don't do this product justice. It is fairly heavy guage steel and about as perfectly formed as it gets. The most important feature is that it works extremely well. It's worth every penny!

    Planers Review You need this!!
If your in the market for a planer - you should know that they produce MOUNTAINS of shavings in no time. Using this well made, all steel dust hood will help keep your shop a little more under control and will certainly help keep your breathing air a little healthier too. (Do I need to mention that you need to hook it up to a dust collector or a shop vac... it does nothing by itslef...)

    Planers Review Planer Dust Hood
The Dust Hood was exactly what I expected, was packed well and delivered as promised--Thank you. bogie sends

Planers Review This one is METAL...
I have two DW733 planers. I bought one new and it came with a plastic hood. Nice because you could just snap it on and off. But it would sometimes fall off from the vibration. I ordered this hood for my 2nd planer which I bought used and didn't come with a hood. Much nicer! Screws on SOLID and won't vibrate off. Ok, so you have to unscrew it to access the knives...but how often is that done anyways?

Planers Review why did i wait ????
i just hooked this hood up to my planer and shop vac and ran a cedar board through from 3/4 to 1/2 inch .the amount of shavings it didnt collect was negligable compared to the deluge of shavings i used to sweep up,the hood is made of steel and installs easily with the screws supplied.as i previously stated,,,why did i wait so long to get this??? i highly reccommend this item.

    Planers Review Poor Quality Plane
I just received a new 9118 and the shoe plates are not flat -- not even close! I am returning it unused. Warped plates make this tool basically worthless. I've noticed a decline in Porter Cable quality and this is either indicative of it or just my bad luck. Porter Cable will not get a second chance on this one. $400 is a lot to pay for a relatively simple tool like this one. It shouldn't be hard to get it right! I make my living with my tools and I don't have time to waste on poor quality.

Planers Review best door planer available.
If you plain on hanging doors for a living, or already do so. buy this planer. it will last forever. with the finger lever you can adjust the height as you plane to help follow high and low spots.

for 3% bevels it is perfect. one other reviewer mentioned about beveling a block to help set. great idea. but it only takes a few minutes or less to adjust bevel.

I have owned it for 2 years (since 5 2003) and have hung over 300 doors.

Planers Review No Better Palne for Doors.
Over the years I have tried lots of different ways to fit doors and have not really been satisfied with the end result until after buying this plane and the book "Door Hangers Handbook". The Spiral bit makes all the difference compared to my other straiht blade plane. The cuts are smooth and easy to control. The depth of cut lever is very easy to adjust. The Bevel fence feels real solid compared to other planes I've used. I bevel the sides of the doors to 3 degrees so I just cut a block of wood using my miter saw that has a 90 and 93/87 degree faces. This way I can set the plane to the bevel and back to 90 in a couple of seconds and it is super accurate. One last thing, this plane is much quieter than I thought it would be. I'm actually looking forward to doing more doors with it!
